Ready vs DIY Quilling Tools

i've done some quilling activity this weekend but i think i have to postpone the entry first. today, i realize my followers are now reaching 50! ^^ {yeay!} excitedly, i decided to spent my time tonight to write this special entry.

well recently, more Malaysian are now interested in quilling art. but i know, the limited tools inhibit most of us in trying it, sadly :'( did others {i.e. quillers from other country} face the same problem?

sample of complete quilling kit for beginner

if you read my 'about' page, you will know how i quill. i start fall in love in quilling and i don't care whether i have the tools or not. i immediately cut the quilling strips by ruler and razor, roll the strips by using my own fingers, and make flower fringe by using scissors. i even estimate the size by myself and after practicing for many years, my quilling skills improve from time to time.

as time goes by, i've done a lot of experiments and researches especially in finding the tools which can easily  be found at stationary shop to replace the proper/ready quilling tools to help me ease the task in quilling. happily to share, below are some information on how to get those ready quilling tools and how to make your own if you can't find the supply:

Quilling Tool

for the quilling tool which is the needle/tool to roll the quilling strip, i don't use any until now. i already get use to roll the strips by using my own fingers. but if you wish to have it-for Malaysian, you can buy the tools from:

or, you may make ur own quilling tools! this new quilling artist, Azlina has share with her blog readers on how to make you own quilling tools by using bamboo stick. you must check it out! ;) : Handmade bamboo stick quilling tool. While Ina, in her blog. She share on how to do your own DIY quilling tool by using needle: DIY quilling tool made from a needle.

Quilling Strips

i never went to any of the above craft shop, but i hope they also provide quilling strips and other related tools. but, you also have second option: DIY! ^^ if you love clean cut of the strip, there are two option. first, by using ruler {i prefer metal ruler} and razor or craft knife such as rotary cutter to cut the strips.  second, by using paper guillotine/trimmer. it surely can make the cutting process faster and even safer, which less dangerous for you precious fingers ;) the most commonly use is 3mm width of strip. oh, for the paper, i suggest to use 80gsm-110gsm paper.

or, you can use paper shredder! ^__^ i started using it since a year ago to make my task faster especially when i have lots of order during certain ocassion. but the cutting is not smooth. it will produce some pattern due to the shredder's  blade. some people see it more artistic, and i agree too. but sometime, clean cut makes the quilling looks more elegant.

if you wish to buy the shredder, here are two type of paper shredder with reasonable price and suitable cutting width that are currently available: type 1 and  type 2

Quilling Board

instead of using quilling board, you may have the above one ^^. i guess there's a ruler with only circle shape, but at this moment, i only found the above. hehe ;) this shape ruler can easily be found in most of stationary shop. as the above, just use the circle measurement, and make your own desired shape by pinch the rolled strip.

Glue

you also may wonder, what is the perfect glue to be used. previously, i use UHU Glue. the excess glue can be easily removed once you've sticked it on your card stock by using needle because it takes time to dry. but few weeks ago, i try to experiment the PVC glue {which is much cheaper} and found out that this glue is much more suitable than UHU glue. it dries fastly and clean! to have a clean work on your card, apply the glue by using paintbrush. try it out and you'll find that this method is more effective, fun, and easy- at least for me ;) if you have glue bottle/applicator with fine tip, you can use that one too. but {traditionally}, i still prefer using paintbrush :)

How To Quill

last but not least, here i share you one video for beginner.

p.s I: i suggest to you to practice quilling, estimate the size, and explore more tips by yourself. the more you practice, the more independant you are from using the tools. and of course, the more you figure out your own skills in making your quilling neat. practice makes perfect, aite? ;)

p.s II: here is one link i found that list down all the necessary tools for quilling. can you figure out how to 'DIY' those tools when you can't found the supply or to cut the cost? think creative! ;)

p.s III: to experienced quillers or anyone who involve in quilling art, more tips and ideas are welcomed. don't hesitate to share together by leaving your comments down here. i would like to learn some from you too! ;)

Is the quilling stripes can be made using anysort of paper?

sure you can, bea :) but make sure it's not to thick or too thin. i suggest you experiment yourself which one suit to your fingers and stabil when they are pasted or stand on the card.

You are so right Asma' about inprovising when you don't have the "right" tool. Any tool (whether it be your hand or something bought) can be the right tool if it works for you. A while back I bought a fringer after getting tired of doing the hand cuts down the side of the paper and you know what...I don't like it. I never use it and still cut by hand. Rolling by hand is not something I have mastered yet. We are spoiled in North America with getting all the quilling tools we need. Now I know we don't need them at all...and you have proven that. I love the look that a shredder makes and even though I can go down the street to buy pre-cut quilling paper I am looking for a shredder now.

Thanks for your post today, it was very informative

cheryl dear, thank you so much for your sharing! :D i really hope quillers can give some of thier opinion and experience in using ready tools since i never had oppoturnity to use them. so that newbies can get some ideas here.

after all, not in quilling only, but i can see in most of other craft field as well, the materials are way too expensive in it somehow kills the desire of being creative and expressing our imagination.

i hope others can share more with us here soon. until then, all the best in your shredder hunting! ;)

kak as..as a beginner ingat nak cube dulu gune ketas beli sendiri..ermm..panjang ketas yg nak di gulung tu standard size A4 paper ke??tgk kat blog u and others mcm lebih panjang je..tgh cube2 ni..any advice?

Asma’ AB said...

hi as :) you can always adjust the size to be longer and shorter depends on what size of quilling item you wanna make. to make it shorter, of courselah gunting jek ;) to make it longer, tampalkan hujung stip dengan strip yang lain. as easy as that. lepas dah gulung, tak nampak pun kesan sambungan tu ;)
